What are the Health Benefits of Lavender Essential Oil?

When I think of lavender, for some reason I always think of little old ladies and those frilly, old-fashioned bags you’d get from relatives at Christmas to put in your drawers, but that’s really doing lavender a serious disservice.

Lavender can do much more than keep your underwear smelling fresh and deterring moths from chomping through your winter socks. Essential lavender oil has amazing calming properties—it even helps to ease nervousness. Either pop some in an oil burner or add a few drops to your bath to help you unwind after a stressful day.

It also works as a natural remedy for headaches, migraines, and insomnia. It’s often used by aromatherapists who want to explore natural products before reaching for over-the-counter medicines—maybe those little old ladies knew more than they let on! In fact, I remember my husband’s great aunt used to carry a little bag of dried lavender around that she’d whip out and sniff when she thought she was about to have one of her “turns.” (Nobody actually witnessed one of Great-Aunt Edith’s turns so maybe she was on to something.)

Lavender oil is a natural disinfectant and healer (this makes sense as the latin name for lavender is lavare which, if you speak French or Spanish, you will recognise as the word for “wash”) and can be applied directly to minor cuts and scrapes to help clean and heal the wound. My sister also used a cream containing essential lavender oil when her young daughter scalded herself with a cup of coffee recently.

According to mindbodygreen.com, other uses for this versatile essential oil include alleviating the symptoms of hay fever, repairing sore and chapped lips, easing nausea and travel sickness, and soothing insect bites and stings.

The more I read about this incredible plant, the more amazed I am. Did you know that lavender can be used to prevent falls? Some nursing homes use it for their elderly patients by putting a small lavender-filled pad in the neckline of their clothes to help reduce falls.

All this from such a delicate little purple flower. Maybe I’ll plant some in the garden this spring and start making my own frilly lavender-filled bags to hand out to everyone next Christmas.

Lavender is one of only three simple yet effective ingredients in CUROXEN, a unique, all-natural wound care ointment that is stronger and safer than triple-acting antibacterial ointments. Read more about how it works here.
